I'm loving "A Love Letter For You," a new project Stephen Powers AKA ESPO's been working on along with the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program. I'm planning a trip to Philly to check it out when the mural project of 50 painted walls is complete. They're even holding sign painting classes!

I recently watched The Universe of Keith Haring on DVD three times and was amazed at how thoughtful Keith was about doing public art. Keith wanted to do something that would last, that the general public could enjoy everyday and not have to go to a musuem or art gallery to see. Here we are 25 years later, and his artwork still can be found in many major cities from public parks, to schools, to even Woodhull Hospital in Bushwick (NOT a nice place--the building looks more like a prison than a place you would go to get better. Genius that Keith would do a colorful mural there. The place needs it).

So happy about all the new murals from Anthony Lister and Os Gemeos. While the twins were painting the Deitch wall on Houston street last month, there was steady stream of onlookers, some were fans, mostly graf heads, and then random people walking by who had no idea who the Brazilian artists were.

I stopped by the wall almost every day because it was on the way home from work, and there was ALWAYS a group gathered around watching them paint and just chillin' on the street, taking photos and video. I always stopped by myself, too. This shows how there is a desire, maybe even demand (especially from other graf/street artists), to see the process of their work. It was a great and rare opportunity to see Os Gemeos use spray paint for the entire mural, to see how they do their detail work, use stencils, and have almost no pre-sketches (at least from what I could tell). We took some great detail shots.

Thor told us a few months ago "Most Art Collectives last around two years." I'd like to say that Upset isn't going anywhere, but many of the crew are busy working on individual projects and as of now, Upset is being put on temporary hiatus until further notice.

Yeah, I know. Bummer. But we will still be updating the blog randomly while still continuing to build our website. Who knows, this time next year we'll be back bigger, better and stronger. The last few years have been awesome. We put together several successful art shows as well as published the first issue of our mag, built a huge audience, and worked with literally hundreds of amazing underground talented artists. We are really looking forward to continuing to build this relationship and further utilize the amount of artists we have networked with in the last few years. We've also built our crew with some hardworking fresh new blood, and we are excited about them keeping our name alive in the street.

In the mean time, here's a rundown of how you can stay on top of what the individual members of Upset will be up to:

Nicky Dieter is always working hard helping others with his amazing design skills, and all without working internet at his home. You can still catch random updates of his awesome photos on his Flickr, and peep his blog GETVIBED for further updates from him throughout the summer. Also keep an eye out for random spottings of our "Romeo" drunkingly harassing people at you're next art show!

Oscar Arriola AKA Fotoflow, the eternal man on the scene and the eye to prove it, his blog fotoflow.blogspot.com has turned into a full fledged tour de force of art events going on in the Chicago area. His incredible photographs are still being posted on his flickr, further evidence of his dedication to documenting the art and music scene in Chicago and he shows no sign of slowing down. Each photo is well worth the wait. We are incredibly lucky to have someone like him as the cultural staple of Upset.

Heather S.
One of the hardest working members of Upset, Heather, our lovely editor of both the magazine and blog, has been the literal backbone to our little collective forever correcting our bad grammar skillz. Not to be overlooked Heather has stuck with us through thick and thin, and continues to be an innovative asset to our group. She founded the blog you read now, edited our first video on Vimeo, and has pulled in impressive publicity for the Upset including placement in Juxtapoz magazine and TimeOut Chicago. She's currently working on writing a children's book about a homeless kitty in Brooklyn, working on her own blog, and plans to make frequent trips to Brighton beach this summer in short shorts to eat pierogis.

Ghetto P
Our distinctive reporter and photographer is our literal man on the street. An every day man's man, Ghetto P is currently in a undisclosed location on the far southside of Chicago toiling on his upcoming new graf mag, Grime Time, and a possible upcoming book, How To Make Sweet Stanky-Like Love cowritten with Mr. R Kelly. You can peep his photos of the Chicago Graf scene here. And possibly spot some of his further writing in the column "Ask A Whino" in the latest issue of Wassup Magazine.

Ricky J.
Rick, nothing is more valuable in a group then the man who just gets shit done, and this was our man. Whether it was driving to other states in the rain to pick up artwork, helping put lights up, painting walls for a upcoming show, or working security at one of our events, Ricky was our main go-to-guy and we can't thank him enough for being such a hardworking core member of Upset. Watch out for a possible mini-webisode series from us in the future called "That's Our Rick!" possibly coming to a screen near you!

Anna Simonovic
Anna is an incredible asset to us and has been on hand at every single one of our events. Incredibly down and a fully dedicated individual she has truly shown her love for the Chicago art scene and pushing for the recognition of overlooked art. She's most likely going to be on a boat this summer while you're on land being a sucka.

Pete Nawara
Welcome our newest designer Pete Nawara. Pete has also been one of our artists that have shown with us for the past couple of years, and his skills go way beyond his paintings as he is helping us to design a better Upset website hopefully to come sometime soon. He'll probably be riding his bike, hanging out in Chicago when he's in town and taking it easy this summer. petenawara.com

The almighty THOR has become one of our most touted artist we have worked with in the last few years, and with well deserved reason. He's an incredibly understated artist and furtive in pushing our collective to be bigger, badder, and more. This Fucko, Emen was one of the photographers to answer our call for new contributors for our blog. These two have kept your booties shaking and the music vibing at our last few events, and with their friend's and family's support they've brought a wonderful family feeling to the group which has helped us out exponentially. Andrew Combe
Andrew, our last addition to the blogging team, does an excellent job at regaling us with tails of the modern day bicycle build-up and let's us know what's going in his neck of the woods, in his own words, "the cultural epicenter of America, Phoenix!" A newly born beautiful baby girl just arrived into his world, and he's doing a wonderful job of raising the little one while also keeping us up to date on his latest bike building experiments. We think he is really, really close to building that Tron bike this summer! Look for continued posts from him.

Gerson Morales
Gerson, the baby of the crew, an amazing graphics designer, and all around good guy he produced our banner and we thank him for all his help! This summer you can probably find G-Money pounding down your block listening to Too Short.

Studio Visit With Gaia

We're sitting in Gaia's Studio with NohJColey and Cahbeezy spilling ink all over the place as Cahbeez hypes me to everything under the sun, ever. Gaia swears that the post below on Streetartblows.com is soooo old, and Cabeezy says, "Hey, I don't search Street Art all the time."

Of course my camera dies, so I'm stuck using my camera phone as I try to document Gaia's work process as he utilizes all the extra hands in the space to help with making work for an upcoming show. The camera phone doesn't do his work the justice.

The summer air is nice as it comes in through the windows of his Brooklyn-based studio.

Every now and again the trio steps into the next room and jokes and laughs as they hand screenprint Gaia's work. Huge discarded detailed rabbits lay strewn through out the studio. Then they come back with the finished product: a shocked feral-looking but somewhat docile-like bear head on a huge canvas that takes up over half the studio. Gaia is excited with the end result and they all step back to observe the finished work. But it's only minutes before they start to talk about the next project--rooftops off the J line. Good Times. Chances are that if you grew up in New York City or Chicago, rapid transit was a major part of your life. Trains are also known as 'Subways’ in New York and 'Els' in Chicago. The names that all these train routes carried were essentially calling cards of where we came from and usually took us to where we hoped to be. For some they were only used for their sole original purpose, to commute to and from ones destination, but for others they were, and to a certain degree continue to be, an art space and canvas.

And for others they are the sanctuary of the public domain--where all is equal and no one is more the better or lesser.
Growing up straight out of Brooklyn the subways were everything and more to a scrawny white kid in 1980s New York. My “home line” was the Canarsie (L) but in fact rode them all, especially with my dad. Once a week he had a day off and after school would map a new ride and go. One of the timeless thrills of riding the New York cars was that at the ends of each car was a storm door with a window in the first and last cars of each set that would overlook the tracks.

From the beginning of the system in 1904 until 1955 all trains had windows over the door that would open! For generations of New Yorkers, especially kids and the many kids at heart, would covet this prized spot especially the window at the head of the train, not only for cooling off during the summer, but for the show that unfolded before you from the tunnels to the Els. Under the East Side and out to Brooklyn, local and express.

To the rail fan, prime real estate is that 60ft or 75ft long subway car and the most coveted spot in the car is the lead car hooked up on a 8 or 10 car train to the penthouse view aka The RFW (Rail Fan Window).

Even after 1955 although subway cars no longer were built with door windows that opened, you could still feel the gust of the tunnel winds come through the window pane with the scent of electricity from the third rail and usually mixing with the ethnic odors of the neighborhood you are cruising through. (New York is a city of odors both delicious and nauseating). Subway rail fan veteran and Brooklynite Stan Fischler has written numerous books and aired documentaries on the thrills of riding from the aforementioned to the unique sounds and jerky movements of trains.

Although modernized over time, New York’s trains maintained a general status-quo until recently. Trains that had full width cabs for the operator and conductor were introduced in the 1970s, but have not become dominant until recently. The underlying purpose of this is to essentially eliminate the conductor and have the operator control all aspects of the ride.

With less then 600 cars in service now from the older fleets their days are numbered. However even with the impending $2.25 fare and shoddy service it is still very much possible, at least now, to beckon back to New York’s golden age riding the rails from the RFW as the city's underworld unfolds in front of you passing blurred stations and colorful lights with twists and curves or from an elevated car rambling above a storied New York neighborhood as the sun sets behind rooftops, trees and water towers. No matter where you ride history is unfolding before your eyes, and even though times may change the spirit of simple things (even in a major and sometimes overwhelming city) the history should be cherished.

Something to ponder next time you watch the city unfold before your eyes and fade behind as you pass by.

The huge handmade sticker sale will feature work from over 70 artists whose work includes intricate graffiti tags on U.S. Postal stickers to more street art-orientated labels featuring stencils, screenprinting, and mixed media. There’s something for everyone and all stickers sell for only $5. Larger artworks will also be for sale. The event takes place on Friday, May 29th from 6-11 PM at 4357 N. Lincoln Avenue.

Featured artists in the show include Aiko, Blanco, C-Damage, Cahbasm, Cosbe, Drexel, Goya, Johnny Tran, Mario Zoots, Melt, Morgan, NohJColey, Overconsume, R. Kelly, Saro, Weedwolf, Zato, 5003, and many more. Artists are encouraged to come and exchange stickers with other artists.

Talk Like a Chicagoian with Nicky Deter

Nicky Deter breaks it down for you how to talk like a true Chicagoian.

Da Chicago inflection is often imitated but just about never properly annunciated. Here is my small breakdown of how to talk like dem guys in Chicago, ovah by dere.

ANNUNCIATE
"S"s are generally hissed or prolonged, especially at the end of words.
"Gesssssh, dissss knucklehead again." or even "Da busssdrivah taken dat asssss to ssschoo."

Over emphasize all "D"s at the start of words, and while you are at it take every "TH" and switch it to a "D". Like, " Oh ya, u'se talkin about d'ose ddudesss ovah by d'ere.
There: D'ere
Those: D'ose
and so on...

The true key to talking like a Chicagoian is knowing how vowels are pronounced.
Basically every vowel turns into an "A" however there are three "A" sounds in the Chicago vernacular Think of the words Cot, Cat, and Caught; they all sound the same but are pronounced differently "Cahht" "Caaaat" & "Cawt".

If you ever find yourself stalling and confused on how to say something just turn all the vowels in the word to flat "a"s. This isn't proper Chicagoese but it's close.

Whats more fun than a bit of mass panic? With the press feverishly fanning the flames of the swine flu "epidemic" I thought I'd jump on board the fear train. Sadly, my biggest fear is color coordinating my swine flu masks with my bike.
I found some masks at the animal holding facility nearby and was overjoyed to find they come in celeste green, just like my sexy rims.

Keep an eye on your friends and neighbors for signs of swine flu (squealing,curly tails or rooting for truffles) and make sure you've got a mask for every outfit and occasion (I need a black one for my tuxedo!).

All three artists create whole worlds of their own iconography amidst a mysterious, playful and at times dystopic backdrop of a fantastical future. Pyramids, outer-space, 2-headed creatures, seemingly functional mechanisms, and nonsensical architecture are all prevalent in each of these artists' worlds. Alex Barry marries a biting sense of self-deprecating humor with the truly bizarre and surreal in his darker drawings and watercolors on paper. Richard Colman creates hyper-busy cyber punked landscapes where fleshy organs, melting colors, bursting rainbows, and people in their underwear hang out in a suspension of time and reality. Josh Slater's drawings and collages feature calmer, more muted tones in his desolate landscapes of pyramids and buildings. We find explosions of stars, shrines perhaps awaiting alien visitation, stairs that lead to nowhere and architecture that eschews realism for new ideas of space.

Eastern District is proud to host Home, Away from Home, a solo-exhibit of photographs by multi-media artist Justine Reyes.

Home, Away from Home draws on images from two bodies of work, “Home” and “Away from Home.” Ms. Reyes spent the past six years photographing her immediate family - her mother and two uncles. This series pairs their portraits with views of empty interior spaces in the house where they all live. In many of the photographs where the figures of her family are physically present a lonely emptiness and unease hovers, often more insistantly than in the vacant spaces. The family is seen engaging in the everyday activities of cleaning, eating, watching TV, doing nothing in particular. The viewer is forced to adopt Reyes' vision, incorporating the artist's own fears of losing her family and trying to capture the moments slipping by with increasing speed as they get older. Ms. Reyes' beautifully sad photographs focus on age, aging, loneliness and isolation, and the fragility of life and family bonds through her stark depictions of details such as her uncle's broken nose.

It's no question that the Lower East Side has been going through some major changes for over the last ten years and more. People have seen it coming--if you haven't seen this documentary on new york legend Clayton Patterson on the conversion of the Lower East Side and East Village into a yuppy and hipster playground, go out and watch it now!

This is one of the elegant newly built giant parking lots in the area.

It's actually on the same block as Clayton Patterson's die-hard gallery and home. It's also behind a bunch of huge condo buildings and hotels that have gone up in the last couple of years. That bill board is looking mighty empty!
R.I.P. That Gate on Rivington. Alot of gates and walls on Essex seem to have gotten the buff recently. Bummer. Props to the dudes out there still putting in work.

Since shit's getting painted over, we decided to take a little photo excursion to try and preserve some of what's up right now and what's still riding.

Andrew Talks Bikes: Ahoy There!

Coming to you live from the cultural hub of the United States of America, Tempe, Arizona! This is Andrew Combe with a brief introduction.

I'm an Australian, married to a beautiful scientist (just like in a movie), and I'm living the dream in a part of the country meteorologists refer to as "stupid hot." As Upset mentioned, I'm about all things bike-related, especially the cultural phenomenon known as "fixed gear bicycles."

I was lucky enough to meet Frank on a tour of duty in the ninth circle of hell (Urban Outfitters). We bonded whilst sharing cigarette breaks, ball busting, shoplifters, and folding t-shirts again and again and again...

I've got to keep it short and sweet at the moment due to the imminent arrival of my first child, but I'll be posting sporadically as time permits to keep you all abreast of all things happening on two wheels.

Bombing Science: How did you get into Graff and what were your early inspirations?

Pose: Boredom and the unbelievable urge to be up everywhere and rock burners. In the early nineties (pre-buff) Chicago’s graff scene was BOOMING! There was so much good graffiti and so many writers, shit was destroyed, riding the trains as a child it was the most unbelievable shit I had ever seen, nothing could describe it. With Graff visually sinking in your whole childhood you just get to a breaking point where you go out, rack some shitty cans and try your hardest to figure it out. Then comes the wildfire that takes over your life, the excitement, bombing, chases, beef, wars, court cases, racking, friends, fights, good times, stories, travels. Pose: Ha, I still haven’t figured out if it is! Seriously I’ve been asking myself that question a lot the past few years, and unsuccessfully attempting a retirement / hiatus. I have massive OCD so painting graffiti has been less about a choice and more about a life coping mechanism for me. Either way regardless of how bad graffiti will run your life through the ringer there is nothing that compares to it and I'm sure I'll never be able to fully quit...ever.

How To Start Your Own Mag For Free:

One of our really talented photo contributors EmenFuckos recently asked for some advice on starting his own mag. I shared with him my personal philosphy on starting your own independent magazine during a time when most magazines are dealing with low ad sales and a changing format for audiences.

Emenfuckos:
"So I have thought about making my own magazine in the past, but I'm not sure about how much money I would actually need to get it up and running, but I'd probably want to do a full color magazine. I would obviously need ads and other types of revenue to get the ball rollin. Since you've had experience makin your own magazines what kind of advice would you have for me? Would it be smart to wait for this shitty economy to pick up or just go for it and hope for the best?"

Here's our advice:

Upset Magazine was printed up pretty much for free by Nicky Deter with a little risk of his friend's job, he was asked "Hey, where did all that paper go?" Here's my advice to you on how to start your own magazine in these troubling economic times.

First walk into your grandpa's room and look around. Does he have a closet? Are there clothes in there--prefferably a suit? Cool, no ignore the stashed bottle of moonshine and porno mags, we are on a mission. If he has a briefcase that's great, grab that too. Next, put your mag together, lay it out, whatever I'm sure you can wikipedia this, I just get really high on glue sticks and whiteout and put it together. Steal the glue sticks and whiteout as well, this will lower your overhead. Place magazine layout into briefcase put on suit and get on train heading to busy downtown area. Get off in busy downtown area.

Look around, do you see a building with a sleepy guard at the desk? Is he swamped with messengers? Or is he just staring at fine temp leg all day? Great your golden! Start heading for the elevators, remember, your supposed to be here, if anyone stops you say, "You're late for a business meeting, with their boss!" If worse comes to worse just say you're in the wrong building; they all look alike anyway.

Get in an elevator, oh and if you can try to look at the building directory. Are there any creative-type firms? Ad Agencies? These companies always have people coming and going and really swanked out offices, and anyways they'll be too busy pushing a giant ball around the office to pay attention to what you're doing. Get off, be sure to smile at the receptionist as you blow past her. If she gives you any lip give her the same story about being late for a meeting, oh, and with a wink ask her for a pen. Great! You're in the office now, head for the copier, do you see any that are kinda out of the way? You've got some privacy now. Start printing and be prepared to know how to work a copy machine, also have every page you're going to print ready to go, hence the breifcase. Work fast, print out one page, check it. How's it look? Good? Cool, hit 150 copies on that bitch! Repeat for each page.

Once you're done, steal a stapler. Look and see if they have one of those long ones for portfolios or maybe those industrial bad boys for manuscripts. Don't worry about stapling it there, just take it with you. Now you're out, hopefully with no one none the wiser. If someone does give you a suspect eye or you start to see some security being pointed in your direction, look for the nearest fire alarm and pull that shit! Scream "Holy shit my skin is melting," and break for the stairs! Once you're a safe distance away, celebrate, you are now in the mag business! Use the money you make off of your first issue towards making a second. Don't get high on your own supply, mags don't make shit in money so if necessary you can attempt to repeat this. Good luck.

For the first time in her thirty year career, famed street photojournalist Martha Cooper will be coming to Chicago to release the highly anticipated 25th anniversary edition of the bestselling book Subway Art. The new edition features a large-scale deluxe format, heightening the visual impact of her classic graffitti images and adding new photographs and text. Going Postal, Cooper’s new book about the burgeoning postal sticker art scene in New York will also be available. Cooper will have photographs for sale at the event, and artist and Chicago native, Thor will be creating an art installation based on Subway Art. The event will take place at Novem Life, 1114 N. Ashland in Chicago.

Martha Cooper is a Manhattan-based documentary photographer whose vintage images of graffiti and hip hop culture are widely published. Subway Art, originally published in 1984, instantly became a staple in the collections of graffiti art and hip-hop fans everywhere and is commonly referred to as, “the graffiti bible.” The project was an in-depth look at the environment captured during the 1970s and 80s by photographers Martha Cooper and Henry Chalfant.

To coincide with Cooper’s release of her other new book, Going Postal, Upset, a collective of artists from Chicago and New York, presents a handmade sticker art sale featuring work from many of the artists in Cooper’s postal sticker art book. Over 60 artists from New York and Chicago are involved in the sale. All stickers sell for only $5 and artists are encouraged to exchange stickers with other artists. Featured artists include Blanco, C-Damage, Faust, Overconsume, Stomach, and more.

The Making Deals Chicago zine premiere takes place at the Novem store, only a few doors down from the Martha Cooper event, at 1104 N. Ashland. The New York City based zine compiles images that creator Frank Serpico finds personally interesting including graffiti, drug dealing, 70s cinema and sports, and urban mayhem with a focus on New York and Chicago—the artist’s hometown. Making Deals issues 1 through 3 will be available, each printed in a limited edition of 100. Issue One features an interview with Chicago graffiti legend Sivel. For the premiere, Serpico, who is also co-founder of Upset, will have illustrations and paintings available for sale.

The Upset is a community of friends, photographers, and artists who have pooled their talents into an artist’s collective with a focus on American street culture. The Upset currently curates art events and publishes an independent magazine. For more information visit upsetmag.blogspot.com.

Novemlife.com originally launched in 2006; created by the Chicago art collective Novem Studios as a platform to collaborate with other artists and performers. The site contains featured artist interviews, photos, and footage, while maintaining a running blog updated by the Novem team itself. The Novem Life space is a storefront gallery on Ashland Ave, opening especially for this event.
