Firsthand observations and satellite images show that the immediate area around the geographic North Pole is now mostly annual, or first-year, ice—thin new ice that forms each year during the winter freeze.
Meaning this summer for the first time in history the North Pole may be free of ice due to Climate Change.
Scientific models had not suggested that the Arctic would see its first completely ice-free summer until somewhere between 2013 and 2030 clearly showing the rapid increase of the effects of global warming.
Almost all models have the Arctic completely ice free in the summer by 2100.

The Supreme Court overturned the 32-year ban on handguns in Washington, D.C., ruling 5-4 that there is a Second Amendment right to own a gun for personal use. Justice John Paul Stevens wrote in his dissent that the court's ruling, its first on the Second Amendment in 70 years, showed a lack of “respect for the well-settled views of all of our predecessors on the court, and for the rule of law itself.” The National Rifle Association promptly brought lawsuits against five other cities with handgun bans, including San Francisco, Chicago, and Oak Park, Illinois.
Still unclear if the Supreme Court's decision will actually lead to the repeal of municipal gun bans Mayor Daley Of Chicago calls the ruling "a very frightening decision.".
This new ruling comes amid an uprise in shootings in the Chicago area where the city has had a ban on handguns since 1982.
The superintendent of the Chicago Police Department and Mayor Daley both blame an excess of guns on the streets for the large amount of shootings that occur in the city of Chicago
Police superintendent, Jody P. Weis has been quoted as saying “There are just too many weapons here, Too many guns, too many gangs.”
Since September, more than 20 Chicago Public Schools students have been killed by gunfire. Last school year, more than 30 students were killed, 24 of them shot — compared with 10 to 15 fatal shootings in the years before.

Os Gemeos (pronounced “ose zhe’-mee-ose.”) are two artists from Sao Paulo, Brazil. Gustavo and Otavio Pandolfo were born in 1974, identical twin brothers whose pseudonym, Os Gemeos, translates to “the twins” in Portuguese.
In Too Far Too Close, they will be transforming the gallery into a fantastical cityscape with houses, doors, and passageways, all brought to life with their signature style of imagery. Building upon a group of artworks created for the Museum Het Domein in the Netherlands, this show features new paintings, sculpture, and installation bringing all the magical moments of their work together in one tightly knit dream world of an exhibition.

Prominent renegade Chicago street artist, Solve, was one of four homicides registered in Chicago this weekend, raising even more the already large number of violent crimes and shootings in the city this year.
Only twenty-five years old, Solve, A.K.A. Brendan Scanlon, was found with multiple stab wounds to the chest at 3032 W. Palmer Blvd. at 2:40 a.m.

The murder Of Brendan Scanlon delivers a overwhelmingly saddening blow to the art and graffiti community of Chicago. Solve was a major influence and participant in the emerging and struggling Chicago street art scene in a city with one of the strongest anti-graffiti laws and tactics in the United States.
This rise in violence in Chicago continues to grow.
Over the past few months, Chicago has seen an increase in gun violence. In the month of April 2008 alone, approximately 40 people were shot and 12 people died in Chicago. Most of the killings happened in just one weekend, where 36 people were shot and 9 were murdered. Most of the shootings were from stolen guns and assault weapons. The majority of the shooters were young men who were under 21 years of age.
Mayor Daley blames the availability of guns for contributing to the violence. Reports are that the police in the city will soon be armed with assault rifles, so that they can match the firepower of the street gangs.
Brandon will be surely missed and never forgotten for his dedication to his artwork and his unselfish acts of sharing them.

Was lucky to catch the world premiere of the independent film Captured, the amazing story of Clayton Patterson, prolific photo documentarian of the turbulent Lower East Side for 30 years.
Screened by Rooftop Films (movies on a roof with a view on a beautiful summer night!), Captured has incredible footage of the Tompkins Square Riots in the late 80s and touches on the nearly overnight change the hood has seen--from being once a slum of junkies with a gritty underground street culture to becoming a gentrified mini-Disneyland for newcomers to NYC. Most importantly, the film shows the need to document local art and cultural movements on camera before they get lost to history, or worse, lost to the the wrecking ball of condo developers.
GM announced that it will be closing SUV and pickup-truck plants, and likely stop making the Hummer H-1.
GM stated that it would close plants in Oshawa, Canada; Moraine, Ohio; Janesville, Wis., and Toluca, Mexico. Several thousand jobs will be affected. Those plants are responsible for pickup trucks and SUVs such as the Chevrolet Silverado, the GMC Envoy and the medium-duty Chevy Kodiak and are expected to end production no later than the end of 2009.
GM also said that it expected to stop building the H1, flagship of its Hummer line.
The Hummer gets an average of 15 miles per gallon, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. it costs more than $150 to fill up the H1's two gas tanks, which together hold 51.5 gallons.
About 12,000 H1s have been sold to the public, including 4,000 by GM, which bought the marketing rights to Hummer from AM General in 2000.
"Today's news is a painful reminder not only of the challenges America faces in our global economy, but of George Bush's failed economic policies. For eight long years, we've had an energy policy that funds both sides in the war on terror without promoting fuel efficiency or helping make our auto companies more competitive," said Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.
