Going Postal Book Release Party Pics

Martha Cooper's latest book release for Going Postal hosted by Ad Hoc Gallery was a huge success. Economy be damned, people were buying art and stickers, slanging, and exchanging all night long like it was some kind of Russian black market. A good time to be had by all. The cops camped outside wished they could come in!

Friends in front of artwork by Overconsume, Cosbe, Stain, and Faust--all artists featured in Going Postal.

Selling stickers.

The Question?

The Vandal Squad Event

From PowerHouse books: "The recent release the book Vandal Squad: Inside the New York City Transit Police Department, 1984–2004 has caused consternation throughout the global graffiti community with charges that author Joseph Rivera is profiting off the very criminals he spent his career incarcerating." (Um, he is profitting off of them and so is PowerHouse books, $35 a book is a bit much, but nevermind.)

"In response, the powerHouse Arena will host a conversation between former members of the Vandal Squad and the graffiti writers, the first such event of its kind. With the intent of providing an open forum for public discussion to discuss the issues regarding the methods that the Vandal Squad employs and their impact on the lives of the writers themselves. Panelists include Vandal Squad author Joseph Rivera, former Commanding Officer Lieutenant Steven Mona, original Vandal Squad Lieutenant Ken Chiulli, graffiti legend COPE2, graffiti activist Ket, and street artist ELLIS G. The event will be moderated by cultural consigliere Sacha Jenkins SHR."

Think there will be a throw down? Or a stimulating conversation on vandalism and the law?

Valentine's Day-- Dedicated to My Ex-Girlfriends

By Nicky Paychecks
It has been said that "music cures the soul", however all things capable of delivering greatness are just as effective dispatching evil. Music is like all forms of art is bipolar. Here is my top ten Country songs dedicated to every ex-girlfriend I have. (Well except you Kristin, we can still make it work. Hit me up after the 14th.)

10. I Hate Every Bone In Her Body But Mine
9. I Ain't Never Gone To Bed With an Ugly Woman But I Woke Up With a Few
8. If The Phone Don't Ring, You'll Know It's Me
7 I've Missed You, But My Aim's Improvin'
6. Wouldn't Take Her To A Dogfight 'Cause I Know She'd Win
5. I'm So Miserable Without You It's Like You're Still Here
4. Piss Up a Rope and Watch that Piss Dribble
3. She Took My Ring and Gave Me the Finger
2. It's Hard To Kiss The Lips At Night That Chewed My Ass All Day.

And the #1 Country & Western song is...
1. She Broke My Heart, I Broke Her Legs

Shepard Fairey: Sue Me and I'll Sue You Back

Update: Shepard Fairey has gots lawyers

The NYTimes reports: In a pre-emptive strike, the street artist Shepard Fairey filed a lawsuit on Monday against The Associated Press, asking a federal judge to declare that he is protected from copyright infringement claims in his use of a news photograph as the basis for a now ubiquitous campaign poster image of President Obama.

Mr. Fairey’s lawyers contend in the suit that Mr. Fairey used the photograph only as a reference and transformed it into a “stunning, abstracted and idealized visual image that created powerful new meaning and conveys a radically different message” from that of the shot Mr. Garcia took.

Manny Garcia, the person who actually took the photograph said, “If you put all the legal stuff away, I’m so proud of the photograph and that Fairey did what he did artistically with it, and the effect it’s had.”

Fairey was arrested in Boston a few days ago.

Shepard Fairey Arrested, Again

This is Arrest #15 for Fairey. The Boston Globe reports:
"Shepard Fairey, the controversial street artist riding a roller coaster of publicity with his red, white, and blue posters of President Obama, was arrested in Boston last night on his way to deejay an event kicking off his exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Art.

Fairey, 38, who is known for his countercultural style, was arrested on two outstanding warrants and was being held, according to a police official with knowledge of the arrest who requested anonymity.

Two warrants were issued for Fairey on Jan. 24 after police determined he'd tagged property in two locations with graffiti based on the Andre the Giant street art campaign from his early career, police Officer James Kenneally said Saturday."

Hudson Pilot Talks of 'Disbelief'

Captain Chesley Sullenberger, pilot of the airliner which made an emergency landing in the Hudson River in New York last month, has given his first interview about the incident on 60 Minutes.
'I knew immediately it was very bad.'
He said his initial reaction was one of disbelief. Capt. Sullenberger was hailed as a hero after ditching his plane safely. All 155 people onboard survived.

Investigators have now confirmed that a large flock of birds collided with both of the engines of Flight 1549 shortly before it ditched, on January 16th. Authorities released a recording of communications between air traffic controllers and the pilot this week.

Capt. Sullenberger is heard calmly telling controllers the aircraft had been struck by birds. Asked if he was able to return to the airport, he answered: "Unable."
In the last of his messages, he said: "We're gonna be in the Hudson."

Masstransiscope: I Ain't Never Seen That Before!

It's great to find suprises in least likely of places. Masstransiscope is idea of the artist and filmmaker Bill Brand, who along with the public art organization Creative Time asked the MTA in the late 1970s to let him transform the tracks themselves into art.

He created a mass-transit version of a zoetrope, the earliest motion picture device, by constructing a long slitted light box alongside a subway track with a series of paintings inside so that, when a train passed, riders experienced the illusion that the painting was moving. The 228 hand-painted panels recently been been repainted and can be seen in the abandoned Brooklyn Myrtle Avenue subway station on the B/Q Manhattan-bound line.

What Smells?

Everyone knows NYC stinks: Hot garbage on the sidewalk in summer, the peculiar fishy smell of Chinatown, poop on the subway. But maple syrup?

Newsday reports: "A maple syrup smell that has mysteriously wafted through New York City numerous times over the years has been traced to a New Jersey facility that processes fenugreek seeds for flavorings. The sweet odor has drifted through swaths of the city off and on since 2005, perplexing New Yorkers and city officials."

Fenu-what? The mysterious scent has finally been linked to a NJ facility that produces the chemical which is used in caramel, maple, and vanilla flavoring. Most smell complaints have come from Manhattan's Upper West Side.

Writing this reminded of the NYC Subway Smell Map from Gawker a couple years ago.
