The Lower East Side

It's no question that the Lower East Side has been going through some major changes for over the last ten years and more. People have seen it coming--if you haven't seen this documentary on new york legend Clayton Patterson on the conversion of the Lower East Side and East Village into a yuppy and hipster playground, go out and watch it now!

This is one of the elegant newly built giant parking lots in the area.

It's actually on the same block as Clayton Patterson's die-hard gallery and home. It's also behind a bunch of huge condo buildings and hotels that have gone up in the last couple of years. That bill board is looking mighty empty!
R.I.P. That Gate on Rivington. Alot of gates and walls on Essex seem to have gotten the buff recently. Bummer. Props to the dudes out there still putting in work.

Since shit's getting painted over, we decided to take a little photo excursion to try and preserve some of what's up right now and what's still riding.

Party's Over!

Cah-Beezy!

And old REVS tag still holding down the block.

And here's a couple of oldies but goodies!

Sorry if we left anybody out,
Props to the ones out there putting in work, don't sleep y'all!

GAIA

Street artist GAIA released this new video that records the observations of passers-by while they walk by of one of his figurative paste-ups in Baltimore.

Wow, that property owner is super expressive about his opinion of graffiti on his property.

Artist Statement:
The focus of this short film is not the piece itself, but the people who encounter the work. All of the participants attend art school in Baltimore. Each person was asked to explain the formal elements of the piece and then allowed to expound on whatever interpretation or ethics of illegal work on the street that they saw fit.
The piece is part of a series of conversations with different individuals from socioeconomic levels/stratospheres. Hopefully, it presents the viewer with the instability of such assumptions in language/education/class.

We're assuming it's this piece they're looking at minus the urban environment, what do you think?

Writers Bench Project

Since the M.T.A. doesn’t appreciate the historical significance of the subway graffiti movement and in most cases refuses to even acknowledge it, this new “unsanctioned project” that utilizes the “camouflage of design to lend stature and authority to the Writer’s Bench at 149th St and Grand Concourse” is not only fitting, but in many cases necessary.

Artists Erik Burke and Yale Wolf have been putting up faux SubTalk posters in stations and even installed a plaque at the legendary Writer’s Bench, the focal point for graffiti artists during the early years where they would meet up to compare notes, trade flicks, swap stories, and show off blackbooks. The illegal, but educational campaign is an interesting method to recapture and broadcast such an important piece of New York City history.

Pipe bomb explosion at New York Army Recruiting center in Times Square NYC. Near 4 am, a hooded bicyclist planted a pipe bomb that did only structural damage at the military recruitment center at 43rd and Broadway.

Goes to show the tighter the grip the government puts on it's people, the will of the strong will show. No matter how much they want us to be computers for the "greater" good, human nature will surface. The majority may fall in line, but as history shows there will always be those who are brave enough to counter act. Be free! (Note: we do not condone violence, but do support protest.)
