Mayor Ray Nagin of the city of New Orleans has issued a city wide evacuation of 239,000 residents due to the nearing of Hurricane Gustav that has torn its way through the Caribbean after hitting Cuba with winds of nearly 240km/h (150mph) and now making it's way through the Gulf Coast. Gustav was upgraded from a class 4 hurricane to a class 5 the highest possible classification twice as strong than Hurricane Katrina was when it hit New Orleans in 2005, killing some 1,800 people and causing hundreds of billions of dollars in damage.
The Mayor was qouted as saying "Anyone who's thinking of staying - rethink it, get out of town"

Obama "America can be a better country"

45 years to the day after the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech on the Mall in Washington
Barack Obama accepted his historic Democratic Party presidential nomination for the White House Thursday night in Denver.
As he gave his speech he promised to keep the American dream alive
“America, we are better than these last eight years,” he said. “We are a better country than this.”
He went on to promise tax cuts for the middle class and pledging to wean the country from dependence on Middle East oil within 10 years to address high fuel prices.
"America, we cannot turn back. Not with so much work to be done. Not with so many children to educate, and so many veterans to care for. Not with an economy to fix and cities to rebuild and farms to save. Not with so many families to protect and so many lives to mend. America, we cannot turn back. We cannot walk alone. At this moment, in this election, we must pledge once more to march into the future. Let us keep that promise - that American promise - and in the words of Scripture hold firmly, without wavering, to the hope that we confess."
Mr. Obama is the first African-American to be nominated for the White House by a major party

Fox News Reporter Griff Jenkins: (Wading into crowd of protestors) What’s your message? What are you upset about?
Masked Protestor 1: I’m upset about everything.
Masked Protestor 2: Fuck corporate media!
Griff Jenkins: (Aside) Well, I guess they don’t believe in freedom of speech. Let’s just work this crowd and see who we can talk to.
Griff Jenkins: (Reading sign) Defend Denver. Explain that to me. What does that mean?
Man in Sunglasses: I’m not going to talk to you.
Griff Jenkins: What’s that?
Man in Sunglasses: I said I’m not going to talk to you.

Disturbing Garfield Cartoons
Who would have guessed that when you remove Garfield from the Garfield comic strips, the result is an even better comic about schizophrenia, bipolor disorder, and the empty desperation of modern life?

Garfield Minus Garfield is a site dedicated to removing Garfield from the Garfield comic strips in order to reveal the existential angst of a certain young Mr. Jon Arbuckle. It is a journey deep into the mind of an isolated young everyman as he fights a losing battle against loneliness and depression in a quiet American suburb.

Crisis in Georgia Bush On Vakay

Russia and Georgia have signed a revised cease-fire agreement, but Russian troops remained within 25 miles of the Georgian capital, Tbilisi. Russian President Dmitri Medvedev promised French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who negotiated the agreement, that Russian forces would soon withdraw from Georgia.
In response to the crisis, President George W. Bush postponed a vacation trip to his Texas ranch by one day
